Back to the Future Retrospective
Ready to take your team on a thrilling journey through your last sprint? The Back to the Future Retrospective is here to help you examine your recent past, celebrate your successes, and make sure your future sprints are even better. Fire up the flux capacitor, because where we're going, we don't need roads... just great insights!
Warm up: Time-Traveling Kick-off!
Get your team's temporal lobes buzzing with this quick warm-up game:
80s Future Shock & Future Gazing! (7-10 minutes)
- Blast from the Past (Facilitator): To set the stage, the facilitator shares 2-3 interesting or funny predictions made in the 1980s about our present day. Have a quick laugh about what they got right or hilariously wrong. (These often came from pop culture, magazines, and tech commentators of the era!)
- Examples you can use:
- "By the year 2000, mail will be delivered by rockets."
- "We'll all have personal flying cars by 2015." (Thanks, BTTF2!)
- "Robots will do all our household chores."
- "Fashion will involve a lot more silver, one-piece jumpsuits."
- "Food will mostly come in pill form."
- Examples you can use:
- Predict the Future (Brainstorm Mode): The facilitator should now switch on Brainstorming Mode. While this mode is active, team members can add their cards privately and won't see what others are writing. Then, ask the team: "Thinking about the next 20 years (roughly to 2045), what's one serious or fun prediction you have for technology, work, or daily life?" Invite participants to add their prediction (and optionally their name) to the '🔮 Future Predictions' column.
- Reveal & Discuss: Once everyone has added their prediction, the facilitator should switch off Brainstorming Mode. This will reveal all the prediction cards to everyone. Go through the predictions, enjoy the range of ideas, and perhaps discuss a few of the most intriguing ones!
🔮 Future Predictions
What does your crystal ball (or flux capacitor) say about the next 20 years? Add your prediction here!
This column is for our warm-up game! Share one serious or fun prediction you have for technology, work, or daily life in the next two decades.
📝 Destination Time
Agents, what was our target destination (sprint goal) for this trip through time? Was the timeline clear?
Revisit the sprint goal. Was it clearly understood by everyone? Did the team feel aligned on what you were trying to achieve? This is your chance to ensure everyone was on the same page from the start of your "time travel."
⚡ 1.21 Gigawatts!
What moments generated serious power? Share the successes and achievements that made us hit 88 MPH!
This is where you celebrate your wins! What went exceptionally well during the sprint? Which tasks were completed flawlessly, or what breakthroughs did the team achieve? Highlight the high-energy moments.
🕰️ Outatime!
What slowed us down, created timeline paradoxes, or made us nearly run 'OUTATIME'? What can we learn from these moments to improve future journeys?
Every trip through time has its challenges. Discuss any obstacles, setbacks, or "Biff Tannen" style interferences the team faced. What threw a wrench in the works, and crucially, what lessons can be extracted to prevent these issues in future sprints?
🏆 Clock Tower Heroes
Who saved the clock tower or showed "Great Scott!" levels of brilliance or teamwork? Give your shoutouts!
Time to recognize your fellow time travelers! Give shoutouts to team members who went above and beyond, demonstrated exceptional problem-solving, provided great support, or simply made the journey more successful or enjoyable.
